1. Spout covers
Spout covers protect your baby’s head from the bathtub faucet. They’re made of soft material that’ll feel way better than metal for any accidental head bump. Spout covers are a must-have on their own, but there are also versions that help adjust the water temperature, if you want to go above and beyond. Remember, you can easily test the water with your elbow and make sure it’s warm, but not hot.
2. Safety plugs
Safety plugs go in electrical outlets to keep your baby’s fingers out. It doesn’t seem like it’d be a big market, but there are actually a wide variety of choices! You can get small, clear plastic caps that plug into the outlet like a lamp cord would. There are also products that replace the entire plate, with covers that slide over to block the outlet when not in use. You can also get covers that will protect an entire power strip!
3. Baby gates
Baby gates work great at the top and bottom of any stairs in your home. They’re also nice to have in doorways so you don’t need to have closed doors in your home. Your baby can play safely in the playroom while still seeing out, and you can see in. The latches are incredibly easy for parents to pop open, while safely ensuring that your child can’t get out.
4. Bed rails
It’s hard to believe, but your baby already needs a big kid bed! It might be time to get rid of the crib, but your child still needs something to keep them from falling to the floor, if they toss and turn at night. Rails can also keep them from climbing in and out of bed and getting into things while the rest of the house is asleep.
5. Cabinet locks
Think of what you keep in your lower cabinets–cleaning chemicals, the trash can, plastic bags to use for garbage. All of these things are incredibly dangerous for your baby. Instead of rearranging your whole kitchen and bathroom, purchase and install cabinet locks. Your child won’t be able to pull the cabinets open, but there’s a simple release switch that makes it no problem for adults to open.
6. Edge guards
Edge guards fit on corners of coffee tables, desks, countertops, and anything at the same level as your baby’s noggin. Edge guards are foam, or soft rubber, with adhesive on the back, so they can be applied and removed easily, as needed.
7. Toilet locks
Not only do you not want your child playing in germ-infested toilet water, you also don’t want to constantly call a plumber to come dislodge clogs of toilet paper, watches, and anything else your baby can grab. Toilet locks keep the lid and toilet seat latched to the toilet bowl. Pick one with easy installation, so you won’t need to use adhesive or glue.
8. Anti-tip safety straps
Anti-tip safety straps anchor furniture and electronics to the wall. When your child starts pulling up to standing and walking positions, heavy things won’t come tumbling down on them.
9. Plastic stove guard
You know those sneeze guards at restaurant buffets? Plastic stove guards are kind of similar to that. They attach to the front of a stove to keep your child from reaching the burners. There are also knob covers that will prevent your child from turning on the burners.
10. Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
These final products aren’t necessarily child proofing products, but they’re necessary for every home. Many people don’t think about installing, or regularly maintaining smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, until they have a baby around.
